JUVENTUS SIGN JONATHAN BACHINI 23 June 1999 Newly signed Midfielder Jonathan Bachini has arrived in Turin. Scarcely had his feet touched the ground when he was whisked away for his medical and then on to a press conference. In a lengthy interview, Bachini expressed his happiness and his hunger for success. "I am proud to be playing for Juventus. Playing here means I have improved a great deal and shown that I deserve my place. "Everything was settled last week, almost unexpectedly. At times like this you can never be sure until everything's down in black and white. It's only today that I've really begun to believe it." Bachini, who was bought after Di Livio's transfer, said he is not afraid to compete. "Bring on the responsibility, bring on the competition as long as it's fair and above board. I don't think I'll be short of motivation though I will obviously be under more pressure than I would have been under if I'd stayed with Udinese." The midfielder already has some friends at Juventus. "I know my Italy teammates very well, Del Piero, Pessotto, Inzaghi and the others who have left. I have no doubt that playing for Juventus will be a big help for me in terms of the national team. Juventus is an excellent show case." Bachini rounded off with a few words about his former team Udinese. "I expected Juventus to be a totally different ball game. Udinese just isn't the same." "Giving up on the UEFA Cup? The Intertoto Cup is fine too. I will have shorter holidays but I don't mind that. Everything will be tougher with Juventus and I don't think I know what the future holds. I have given it my best shot whatever the circumstances throughout my career and I will do the same here." Ancelotti was also happy and refers to the Bachini signing as an important one. Ancelotti said he was happy about how the club operated. "Some things weren't possible but I know that there was plenty of effort to achieve certain aims. "We haven't made any spectacular signings because teams who have great players hang on to them. Apart from Vieri we can't talk about any others. The top players? A top player is usually a forward or a midfielder and from that point of view we have done well with Del Piero, Inzaghi and Zidane. "Roberto Carlos was one of the players I liked the most. Djetou is a very useful player. Kovacevic may not be famous but like the others he will have his chance to make his name soon. This is a stronger Juventus and one we hope will not be dogged by so many injuries as last season's squad. "At Chatillon we will prepare and evaluate players so as to be ready for the beginning of the league campaign. The Intertoto Cup will be approached as if it were a series of friendly matches, the only difference being that there is more hanging on the result." General manager Luciano Moggi announced the imminent meeting with Del Piero and his agents. "It should be the final meeting to hammer out a new contract for him. We will meet on Tuesday June 29 in the morning. We are all optimistic. "Some big clubs are pursuing Iuliano and Montero but we're not interested in selling. Deschamps will go if we find someone to step into his shoes. Otherwise we regret that we won't be able to release him as we were able to in Di Livio's case." | |||||||||||||||||||||||
| MICHEL PLATINI | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| THE LEGEND OF MICHEL PLATINI 17 June 1999 Michel Platini had a glorious career in the Juventus shirt. He wore the black and white colours for five seasons and will always be a Bianconero at heart. The French striker played 224 matches: 147 in Serie A, 39 in the Italian Cup, and 38 in the European Cup. His list of successes is long: two Scudettos, the Champions' Cup, the Cup Winners Cup, the European Supercup, the Intercontinental Cup and the Coppa Italia. He grew up in Nancy, in the heart of France. Before moving to Turin to replace Liam Brady, he played with Saint-Etienne, a team also close to his heart. His greatest achievement was being made European footballer of the year three times, and being leading scorer in the Italian championship for three seasons. However, his big regret is that he didn't play in the UEFA Cup. During the bianconeri centenary celebration, he was proclaimed as the best. Very few players can boast such a prestigious history, enriched by his European Championship-winning exploits with the French national team. In his five years spent with Juve between 1982 and 1987, he scored more than 100 goals. It's not hard to see why he became Agnelli's favourite. The ex-Fiat president used to say: "We bought him for the price of a loaf of bread but Michel was like caviar." The two of them still keep in touch, talking about football and their memories. His popularity is overwhelming. No other player has become as popular as he was in his heyday. When he retired in 1987, Platini decided to move away from the world that had made him a star. He felt that making a clean break with the game would be less painful. However the temptation to carry on in the game, even under a different guise, prevailed. First he became the French national coach, then in 1998 the president of the French World Cup committee. So successful has Platini been in his managerial career that he has climbed up through FIFA's ranks and carved out a position for himself alongside Blatter, Havelange's predecessor at the head of football's world governing body.
